Cyber Security And Social Media...
Currently Facebook hosts 2.07 billion active monthly users. We define active users as those who have logged in using emails and passwords to the largely engaged social portal. One should note that 1.74 billion active users are engaged by mobile devices supported by giant interfaces like Google email accounts. Making Facebook the most popular social media network platform worldwide. So how secure is our personal information really when supported on an interface like email?
As you know, Facebook users must register before using the social network and are free to create a personal profile in order to interact with other users which they can add as friends. Users may join user groups based on workplace, college or school and can also categorize their Facebook contacts into lists. But that's not all. Users can also interact with a wide selection of applications including social games or other services like the photo-sharing Instagram.
Let's look at it like this. Social media, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or even Instagram is where your employees hangout before coming to work, (during meetings), on their lunch break and often the first thing they check when they get home. There lies the risk. Social media presents a certain since of comfort. Allowing us all to let our guard down and share, share, share information we wouldn't naturally talk about to others who have not been clearance to know. A slip of a post not well thought out has certainly backfired on a many of employees since our last 2016 election.
LinkedIn is also used to mine employees’ email addresses, so a phishing email containing a link to a malware-infected site or ransomware could very well be targeted at your organization. Twitter too, is often used to phish emails that contain malicious links.
Ready For The Facts?
Social media will always excite employees, and even organization CEO's. However, the one thing organizations must have in place is a system that not only educates everyone from the boardroom to the mailroom on what and how much they should and should not share on social media, but have in place organization system Security Test & Evaluation (ST&E), Continuous Monitoring, and Policies and Procedures.
At Alde Security Solutions, organization training to proper online use makes it easier for employees to understand that cybersecurity is a priority for them as well. Education is key and we make it simple. Don't wait tomorrow is coming. Are your employees informed?
